Frequently Asked Questions

The Classbook Programme

What is a classbook?

OurClassBook offers an exciting, collaborative project where each student in the class contributes two pages to the classbook: one of writing and another of drawing. It offers teachers and students an engaging educational project that helps build students’ sense of accomplishment, all while working on their literacy skills!

What is in a publishing kit?

Each publishing kit contains 68 pages; 32 for writing and 32 pages for illustrations. The kits also include pages for the book cover, Title Page, Dedication Page, and About the Authors Page.

Also included is a student-created sample book, a Quick Start Teacher Guide to help guide you through the process of turning your class into published authors, along with Parent Order Forms for parents who wish to purchase a copy of the classbook.

Is the publishing kit really free?

Yes! The programme is free for schools to take part and only requires a minimum order of one book to publish. We also include one free classroom copy of the book as a thank you to the class teacher for publishing with us.

We will turn your students’ masterpiece into a full-colour, professionally-bound book. Everything you need to turn your class into real published authors is included in your kit.

In exchange for this, all we ask is that parents are given the opportunity to order a copy of their kid’s book, if they want to. Included in the publishing kit are parent order forms.

Parents can order a copy of their child’s book from €14* and are under no obligation to purchase. Pre-ordering copies of your class’ book is the cheapest time to order!

* The pre-order price will be available during the publication period (from when the teacher hands out the Parents Order Forms until they send the manuscript to our offices). After this period, parents can always purchase extra copies via the website as well (through the “Order Published Books” section). Books ordered at this time are charged at the full price and the pre-order discount is no longer available. However, this price also includes delivery to a home address.

What is a submission date?

Your submission date is the date we can expect your class’ book for publishing. This can be any date of your choosing. This ensures we can get your published books back to you in time for the end of term or for your publishing party.

Your submission date is flexible and can be changed at any time.

We also offer an An Post postage label for sending your class’ masterpiece back to us free of charge. We recommend posting your book to us for publishing at least one week before your submission date.

If you would like to set a submission date, or move your date, please contact us at info@ourclassbook.ie.

How do I sign up to turn my students into published authors?

It’s simple and easy – start by ordering your publishing kit here, and select your submission date. Then get creative – your class will write and draw their book. Send us your class’ masterpiece one week before your submission date using your free An Post postage label. We will deliver your class’ published books directly to your school in just four to five weeks.

To make things even easier, we’ll send you helpful tips, tricks and reminders along the way. If you have any questions, reach out to us at info@ourclassbook.ie.

Can any class create a classbook?

Yes, all classes can create a classbook. It’s a fun and collaborative project that can be adapted to any class level, course, or student needs.

You can find replacement kit materials, along with other pages suitable for different handwriting levels on our website.

What topics can I write about?

You can write about any topic. Your only limit is your imagination! Popular topics include animals, the future, memories, travel, fiction, poetry and more. Alternatively, link your topic to an interesting topic that’s relevant to what your class has been learning about. This project can be done as an independent project or linked to your curriculum.

If you’d like some inspiration, see our page on topic ideas.

How long does it take to get my published books back?

We recommend posting your class’ manuscript one week before your submission date using your free An Post returns label.

You can expect to receive your class’ published books delivered straight to your school in just four to five weeks from when we receive your manuscript for publishing. Keep this timeline in mind when planning your publishing party or last day of term.

Publishing

How many pages are in a publishing kit?

Each publishing kit contains 68 pages; 32 for writing and 32 pages for illustrations. The kits also include pages for the book cover, Title Page, Dedication Page, and About the Authors Page.

What is the maximum book size I can have?

The publishing kit includes enough pages for 32 students to contribute two pages each; one of writing and another of drawing.

If you would like to create a book with more pages than this, please contact us to discuss our larger book pricing options.

Can I add photos in my book?

Yes, you can add as many photos as you like – they make a great addition to a classbook. Print the photo onto the kit page or adhere the photo to the page using Pritt Stick. We do not recommend using Sellotape.

Please note that your original photo will not be returned.

How do I achieve a vibrant, colourful book?

For writing, use blank ink where possible. While it is not recommended to use pencil, we understand it may not be possible for younger classes to use blank ink. In these cases, we suggest using a darker pencil.

For drawing, use markers for vibrant colours. Colouring pencils can be used, but the colour will not be as vibrant in the published book. Please do not use crayons, glitter, or Crayola Twistables in your book.

Can Tippex be used on the pages?

Yes, Tippex can be used. Please note that it can leave “shadows” in the published books so we recommend using it as infrequently as possible.

When do I need to post my publishing kit back to CJ Fallon?

You should send your kit back to CJ Fallon one week before your submission date using your An Post returns label.

How do I post my kits back to CJ Fallon?

Simply adhere your pre-paid An Post label to the box containing your class’ manuscript and drop it off at your local post office.
