HOW TO CREATE THE BEST CLASSBOOK POSSIBLE

Before you begin working on your manuscript, please read the Teachers Guide included in your publishing kit.

If you want to get your class excited about the process, show them this video!

WRITING AND DRAWING

Choose Your Topic

The first step in publishing a book with your class is selecting a topic. Your class can write about anything – your only limitation is your imagination! Some fun topic ideas could be the future, memories, animals and nature, science fiction, and more. You could also write a book linked to the curriculum – perhaps your class recently learned about the famine and they could write a book about everything they learned! See some more of our favourite book topics for inspiration.

Why not show your class an example of this student-created sample book online to get them excited!

Get Writing and Drawing!

Practice makes perfect! Show your class the benefits of creating a draft of their story and self-editing their work. The kit pages should be used for their final draft.

Each child gets two pages: a lined one for writing and a blank for their drawing. There are instructions on the left border or on the back of your kit pages which will instruct you how to distribute the pages to your class.

Please be sure to write on one side only to avoid colours bleeding through the page.

We offer replacement materials for everything in your publishing kit. Simply print them off. We recommend printing kit pages on good quality paper (we use 100gsm paper). Be sure to write the page number on all replacement pages. Tippex can be used on mistakes, but we recommend using it sparingly, as it can create ‘shadows’ in the finished book.

To get the best results, we recommend writing with black pen and drawing with markers to ensure your students’ work is vibrantly shown in your published book. Where pen and markers are not suitable for your students, you can use pencil or colouring pencils, however the colours will show up a little fainter in the published book. Please do NOT use crayons, Crayola Twistables, paint, or glitter.

Your students can also type their work! If your whole book will be typed, you can provide us with one word document. If you plan on using a mix of typed, handwritten, or hand-drawn pages, please print out the typed pages and include them in the envelope when you submit your manuscript for publishing.

It is important that your books pages are numbered as it ensures that no pages in your book are missed during the scanning and printing process. Page numbers can be typed or handwritten.

You can include as many photos as you would d like in your book! We recommend using good quality photos. You can either print them on the kit pages, or use Pritt Stick to affix physical photos to the kit pages. We do not recommend using Sellotape to affix your photos.

Your Classbook

The publishing kit contains two pages per student for a class of 32 students. If you have a larger class than this, please contact us at info@ourclassbook.ie and we will advise you on how to proceed.

Some schools choose to do school-wide books, or group classes together into one large book. Please email us at info@ourclassbook.ie to learn about this service.

Your Submission Date

Your Submission Date is the date we can expect to receive your manuscript for publishing. This date is flexible and is set by you. You can change your submission date on our website by inputting your Order Number and selecting a new date. You can find your Order Number in the top right corner of your Teacher Order Form or in a recent email from us. If you have trouble locating it, please contact us at info@ourclassbook.ie.

Please note that it can take up two working days for your new publishing date to update in our system.

Share the Good News!

Have the parents heard that their children are becoming published authors? We recommend sending home the green Parent Order Forms three weeks before your Submission Date. We will send you an email to remind you of this. If you have not received any emails from us in your inbox, they may be in your junk folder.

Payment

Since it is not safe to send cash with An Post, we ask the class teacher to collect the payment from the parents and to make one payment on behalf of the class for their order. Payment can be made by online using a credit or debit card, or by including a cheque in your kit when you submit it for publishing. Please note that we cannot begin publishing your classbook until payment has been made.

Fill in the Teacher Order Form with your class’ order information and pack it into your kit envelope.

Submit Your Class’ Masterpiece for Publishing

It’s time to pack up your kit and submit it for publishing. Place the pages with your students’ writings and drawings into the envelope (face up and in order), along with the Teacher Order Form you filled in. You can keep the green Parent Order Forms for your records.

We cover the cost of shipping! Use the returns label included in your kit to send your manuscript to us free of charge. If you have misplaced this label, email us at info@ourclassbook.ie and we will provide you with another one.

We recommend posting your manuscript for publishing one week before your submission date.

Checklist Before You Submit Your Manuscript

We recommend posting your manuscript to us one week before your Submission Date. Before you do, there are a few steps things that need to be done.

1. Send the green Parent Order Forms home with your students. Parents are under no obligation to purchase. To keep this programme free, all we ask is that parents are given the opportunity to order a copy of the book.

2. Collect payment from the parents and make one payment on behalf of your class. You can pay on our website or by including a cheque made payable to CJ Fallon in your kit.

3. Fill in the Teacher Order Form included in your kit, which summarises your class order.

4. Pack up your kit by placing the pages in order, an all facing upwards. There is no need to staple or use paper clips to separate children’s work. We will scan the pages in the order you submit them.

5. Place the kit pages and the Teacher Order Form in the kit envelope, and put it in a box. If you have lost the box we sent you, you can use any box or a padded envelope return your manuscript to our office for publishing.

6. Place the pre-paid An Post label included in your kit on the box, and drop it off at your local post office.

7. Your published books will be delivered directly to your school in just four to five weeks from when we receive your manuscript for publishing.

If you have any further questions, see our FAQs page, or contact us at info@ourclassbook.ie.
