As the new school term approaches, these five New Year writing prompts are a great way to get your students excited about writing. Each one is designed to help students explore their creative side and come up with unique ideas. Plus, they’re a fun way to kick off the new year!
#1: The First Day of the New Term
Start a New Year writing prompt about the adventures of a group of students as they embark on their first day back to school this term. The story could be grounded in reality, or be entirely fiction. Let your students run wild and explore all avenues to ensure they enjoy themselves!
#2: New Year’s Resolutions
Create a list of New Year’s resolutions for your favourite character from literature or pop culture and explain how each will impact their life. This will give the students a chance to think outside the box and explore more magical or supernatural genres, and even practice fiction writing.
#3: What do you Hope to Accomplish this Term?
This can be anything from getting better grades to making new friends or signing up for a new hobby. It’s important to reflect on your goals for the upcoming year and how you plan on achieving them. Writing about it gives you a chance to think even further into the future, and what better way to start off the new term than with a clear vision of success!
#4: ‘’10 Years From Now…’’
Imagine yourself in the future, 10 years from now, reflecting on the start of this new term – write a letter describing your experience and how much you have grown! Students can write about the kind of person they’d like to be, what kind of hobbies they’d like to pursue, and even the places they’d like to visit!
#5: Describe your Biggest Accomplishment in the Last Year
Think about something that you’re proud of having accomplished in the past year, no matter how big or small it may be. Whether it was setting a personal best time for running a race, getting high marks on a test, or playing an instrument with confidence at a recital, write about why these accomplishments are important to you and what lessons they taught you about yourself! This will help motivate and inspire you for all of 2023.
You can use these writing prompts to help you start off the new term on the right foot! Whether your goal is to boost creativity, document experiences, or think critically about what the future holds, these activities will spark meaningful introspection and exploration. Use them to kick off conversations with friends and peers, or simply take a few moments for yourself to reflect and jot down some notes. No matter how you choose to explore the topics, these five writing prompts are sure to get your creative juices flowing! So, grab a pen and paper, and let’s get started! Good luck!
